Harvest Monday Labor Day Edition

This week, I harvested the last of my tomatoes and pulled the plants. They had wilt in a bad way and I found a tomato hornworm on the plant when I pulled it. (yuck.)

I am starting to harvest more okra than I was. I guess it is coming into its own. The plants look really good and healthy. The okra makes me so happy!

Every day I harvested some okra.  Every day I also harvested Lima beans, Mississippi Cream peas, and Ruth Bible beans.

This week, the local news was talking about sweet potato harvests in town, so I harvested my sweet potatoes. They looked really good. I don't know how many I should have gotten out of the number of slips I planted, but I feel pretty happy with the harvest. That bucket was pretty heavy and the sweet potatoes in the photo with the tomatoes are not the same sweet potatoes. I put them on the picnic table to start curing them. And then I brought them into the garage to finish curing. It was about 24 big sweet potatoes and quite a few more little bitty ones.

I am linking up with Daphne's Dandelions for Harvest Mondays. Go on over and see what everybody else is harvesting!

  2. Lovely sweet potatoes. I really wish I could harvest mine now, but with our season we wait as long as possible. I usually harvest them at the end of September. I've really missed eating sweet potatoes.

    1. Thanks. I really didn't know anything about growing sweet potatoes. I don't even know if I harvested them at the right time.

My neighbor had told me that I could scrabble around under the plants and pull a few to check on them. I did that and got 3 big ones a few weeks ago. I cured them and we ate those last night. They were, Oh, so good.

  3. Yay for sweet potatoes! I'll wait until sometime in October here to dig ours. Your okra is a valuable commodity. They were wanting $3 at a local farmers market for a pint!

    1. I found out that they want $3 for okra here, too. Since mine were growing so well, I didn't know that others were having trouble, but it seems that most of the okra around here didn't produce. We sure are enjoying it. :)

  4. Nice harvest. I've never grown okra before. But then again, I'm not blessed to be growing in Zone 8. :) The sweet potatoes look great too.

    1. Okra is one of the few things I can grow here when it gets to 90 or 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity. And the family really likes it so it's a win. :)

  5. Those sweet potatoes are gorgeous. Another crop that I must try at some point, although I'm the only one in my family that eats them...but that's never stopped me from growing something before ;) My tomato plants are going downhill too - not sure how much longer they will last.

    1. Margaret, you should try them. They were really easy to grow.
