Harvest Monday July 14, 2014

A big thank you to Daphne from Daphne's Dandelions for hosting Harvest Mondays!

Pears

Here are some pictures from this week's harvests. The tomatoes are not from my garden. I went to a you pick place and bought enough to can some crushed tomatoes in their own juices.

  1. Love the pears. I planted one pear tree and wonder if I'll ever get a harvest or not from it. I have a neighbor that has a pear tree that must be 25' tall and I don't know how he picks it.

    1. Mine is about 30 feet tall. My husband built this special tool that enables us to pick the bottom 2/3. For the rest, we just hope the squirrels throw them down. (And usually they do.)

  2. Nice pears. I live in apple country so there is no point in growing them since the orchards sell them so cheap. But pears are something special. I planted a few dwarf Asian pear trees but the pines shade them and keep throwing enormous branches on them during wind storms. Wish I had a 30 foot pear tree!

    1. I hope your pear trees will be successful for you. I wish we had even one apple orchard within driving distance, but I haven't found one yet.

  3. Nice harvests! It's crazy how many tomatoes it takes to can. I've never canned tomatoes from my garden, but maybe this year. Your pears look lovely. What kind of pear trees do you have?

    1. You are so right. I can't ever grow enough tomatoes to can. This is the first year I took the trouble to go to the you pick place.

I have an Asian pear tree that some of the neighbors who remember the property before it was a subdivision say is about 80 years old.

  6. We cheated and went to the farmer's market for more tomatoes. Seems like you can never have enough at one time :). Like the Okra. I didn't plant any this year but now I wish I had.

    1. Farmer's Market or you pick is the only way I can get enough tomatoes for canning. The yard is too small for enough tomatoes for canning from here. That's okay. I support local farmers that way.

  7. Nice variety of harvest. Your canned tomatoes look delicious and your pears look so yummy. Last year I harvested some Asian pears. This year the trees have little pears but one trees pears are turning tan already and they are still small so looking doubtful. Nancy

    1. Thanks, Nancy. I am sorry your pears aren't looking well this year. Maybe they'll bounce back.
