Potatoes in Grow Bags

The potatoes in grow bags, looking  great and healthy.
I was really hopeful about the potatoes. I bought the best seed potatoes I could afford.

I added 4 bags of soil into the grow bags.

I read up on growing potatoes in grow bags through the Kenosha Potato Project.

So, all signs pointed to a nice potato harvest.

I harvested them June 10, 2014, and well....

We harvested 36 potatoes, including the ones smaller
than Dum Dum lollipops.
Yeah, um, 36 potatoes. Not 36 pounds. Fail.

I guess I don't know how to grow potatoes. Sigh.

  1. Too bad. But the ones you did get look really nice. I don't grow potatoes anymore, but when I did I never tried bags. I figured they would never get watered in a container. I do much better in ground with things.

    1. The few we did get tasted really good.

My neighbor said they would grow better in the ground, too. I really don't have a lot of growing space, so right now they aren't on the list to grow again.

  2. That's too bad,but it looks like it's still too early to harvest as they fully green. I have one pot growing the same way as you do, so will see how it does. I've seen others grow it in bags and it came out pretty well.

    1. The picture was not taken at harvest. They looked dead and brown when harvested. And there were 10 or so rotten potatoes in the bags.

  3. Don't feel bad - I failed miserably when I tried potatoes in grow pots. I got foliage, but very few potatoes, less than you. It did seem easier to just grow them in the ground. I always have luck that way, but I was doing a talk on container veggies and my conclusion was 'don't do potatoes'!

    1. Thanks, Dave. That is my conclusion, too. I don't know if I will try growing them in ground. I don't have a lot of space.

  4. Pot and bag potatoes are hard. I can grow potatoes by the bushel in regular soil, but my experience growing them in a pot was even worse than yours, I think we ended up with about 5 tiny potatoes!

    1. Thank you for saying so. The foliage looked so nice that I was surprised how bad the results were.

  5. I have the same experience in growing potatoes in grow bags, I've done it twice and both times failed.

    1. Well, it sounds like the consensus is that growing potatoes in grow bags is not the way to do it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
